Die DL schied daraufhin aus der UDF aus. Bayrou nutzte diese Gelegenheit, die in der UDF verbliebenen Bestandteile zu einer einzigen Partei umzuwandeln, unter der Bezeichnung Nouvelle UDF.

Bei der Wahl zum Europaparlament war er Spitzenkandidat der UDF-Liste. Die Liste erreichte 9,3 Prozent der Wählerstimmen und Bayrou wurde Abgeordneter im Europaparlament.
